So last week I got into a bit of a twitter war about the meaning of “queer”

…with another supposedly gay-affirming account.  They said that “queer” means “nothing” because it’s “vague” and that if someone said they were queer you couldn’t trust them (?????)

I said  that someone can identify as queer and that doesn’t necessarily mean any one thing. They might only like women, or only like men, or like cis men, or trans women, or whatever, but the point is that identifying as queer is really a refusal to be hemmed in to one narrow box just for the comfort of others.

And I was accused of being a “screaming hyena” for saying this. Not cool.

So of course I’m gonna podcast about this next week, but I want to hear from you—what does queer mean to you? Does it mean “nothing” because it can mean anything (which is what this other account was claiming), or does it mean something really important BECAUSE it can mean whatever you want it to mean?
